Gum disease is the collective term for gingivitis and periodontitis. Gum disease affects most people at some point in their life and is usually caused by plaque build-up on the teeth.
Gingivitis is early gum disease, where plaque build-up causes inflammation of the gums, leading to redness, swelling and bleeding with brushing, or flossing. Periodontitis is the more advanced stage of gum disease and is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. When left untreated, the inflammation spreads to the bone, resulting in bone loss, loose teeth and eventual loss of teeth.
We screen for gum disease at every 6-monthly check up and are specially trained to manage the condition at any stage, whether early or advanced. If you have experienced bleeding of gums, or looseness of teeth, please make an appointment now on 08 9335 2691.
